Take part in our research and receive a £15 Amazon Voucher

Tuesday 9 January 2018

Get Yourself Active and the University of Birmingham want to find out what you think about how information about physical activity and sport is presented to disabled people.

You can do this in your home. It would take in total about 15 minutes of your time.

The project

Disability Rights UK has partnered with University of Birmingham to conduct a study into how we produce knowledge and information about physical activity aimed at disabled people.

Our findings

Disability Rights UK has been working with partners in disabled people’s user led organisations to develop models of practice to support more disabled people to be active locally. The evidence we will gather from this research will help us to understand how disabled people want physical activity knowledge to be communicated.

Who should take part in the research?

We would like to hear from you…

  • If you consider yourself disabled and affected by one or more of the following impairments: amputation, spinal cord injury, restricted growth, Cerebral Palsy, visual impairment, hearing impairment
  • If you have been unable to take part regularly in physical activity or sport for a while
  • If you are over the age of 18

How to get involved

Get in touch with us if you are interested in taking part in our research and give us your name and the best way for the researcher to contact you. We will then arrange a time for you to take part in the research from your own home. Once your bit is done you will receive your £15 Amazon voucher. You may also randomly be selected to receive £100 Amazon Voucher!

  1. hi There,
I’m working at the UNESCO Chair here in Ireland titled transforming the lives of people with disabilities, their families and communities through PE, sport, recreation and fitness.. I would like to share this post on our facebook page but before doing so I wanted to clarify, do the participants have to be based in the UK?

    1. Hi Aisling, Thank you for getting in touch and wanting to share this information on your Facebook page. I have checked with the researchers and they do not have any restrictions as to where to participants are based. Kind regards, Kirsty

  2. Good evening
I would like to take part in the research project you have ongoing. I have had 3 failed back operations which have left me in constant severe pain,. I have a lot of pain on mobilisation even swimming is agonising normally the water is too cold or lukewarm which cause my back & legs to go into spasm which I don’t think council or leisure centres have taken into consideration

  3. Hi – I’m 59 and have suffered from back pain since the early 80s. I now have chronic pain, including neuropathic pain, in 3 quadrants of my body. I also have inherited my Dad’s body type-long back, short legs, which predisposed him, and me, to lower back pain and sciatica in particular.

Spinal surgery in the early 90s following a fall which resulted in a herniated disc helped for about 10-12 years, as did Pain Clinic interventions, including day surgery. I finally medically retired myself in the early 2000s.

Trying to keep mobile and exercise appropriate is very difficult. As another potential participant wrote public swimming pool temperatures are too cold, gyms and classes aren’t geared to disabled users’ particular needs and NHS classes aimed at, for example, chronic pain sufferers are linked to medical referrals, not self referral, and of limited duration.

Even if I don’t fit the criteria, thank you for doing research into this subject.

  9. I was very fit until I had a RTA which left me with a BAK cages inserted @ C/4/5 & C5/6 & a marked weakness down the left side (& I’m left-handed!) My left leg is twice the size of the right as the lymph drainage system no longer works. I also have a ruptured abductor cuff @ the left hip. Added to this I suffer from Ehler-Danlos Syndrome I paid for lessons to help me to swim again. Complete waste of time & money. Head does not turn, leg cannot move up & down & arm refuses to obey commands from the brain!!

  14. Some of us are not able to take part in physical activity events because we have no companion to accompany us to get there or no transport. My local council, Camden, in Lon don, tells me to employ a companion at my own expense, or to pay for transport myself. Both of which I cannot afford. Local charities tell me they have no volunteers \”trained to push wheelchairs\”. So we stay at home inactive and isolated.
